Vénus à deux

Text

In the miracles of gravity and light,

of attraction and shining,

lies the paradox.

Pulled toward each other,

it seems we might collide

and implode.

Instead, we circle

in the same direction,

orbiting each other’s beauty.

Venus spins opposite

from most other planets.

Flipped on her axis in some distant time,

she still circles that bright star,

but now in retrograde

so that the sun sets in the east.

Perhaps that’s what this love does.

Flips us on our axis to orbit

the song of our own lasting devotion,

as propelled by love’s continuing expansion,

we see all the wonder

of a sunrise in the west.
