The phone is for someone

Text

Shrill ring shatters the silence of the dinner table.

Three times, then hang up                          pause

& call again

a not-so-subtle morse code, the

predetermined plan unfollowed.

Air pulls taut and time

      begins to unravel;

a private implosion.

The warring wondering what-if's

scattered across the good china

alongside the peas and corn,

escaping every effort at

impalement.

There's no pinning those two down.

Sorry, what were we saying?

Impulses travel lightning fast down the line,

connecting souls

like station depots

burning bright in the dark mask of

living absence;

a midnight sea of stars.

My heart                        flown

impossible distances

at the muted sound of

      your quiet laughter

from the other side.
