A herd of bees died when I ate all the honey
Shoveled pollinator plants into my mouth & sneezed
lavender
Tongued aromatic herbs & feigned
pleasure at the melange;
Nothing less than an assault
against hummingbirds and butterflies
Who, after all, are admired for their sleek greed & excess
falling from gullets
I crunched their husks underfoot
while nibbling the insides of hives
Jealous their heavy bodies allowed
flight despite laws of physics
Envious the hearts they beat to death
with gossamer wings
How we never mourn the sacrifice
they'll make of themselves
For a sweetness,
what they'll do for a sip
