I remember you as you are
Brown hips, wide eyes and crooked eyes
One eye bigger than the other
Nose slanted towards the gods
begging a flower to bloom
Small hands , clasping around the mortar and pestle
Arms made for grinding crunchy brown beans
A sweet aroma coating the room of unspoken heritage
I spend most of my days days - alone and brown
Alone and brown in the streets that reek of gentrification and half smoked cigarettes
I dream of the day I can rest in your arms
In the belly of the quetzal
I won’t hear white people's words - it will only be silent
Silence will coat our home together
Our home alone in the hills of glory
In the land that hurts, that cries, that stimulates
A land that evokes our deepest sympathies
Only to be thrown back into the cycle of grief
We will have stray cats and dogs
and a parrot that is free to fly amongst the ceiba trees
Just you and I
brown
And alone together
