<p>my gender is not static.</p>
<p>my gender evolves.</p>
<p>it mutates.</p>
<p>it branches in various directions all in a single moment.</p>
<p>it can hang from the tip of one branch for days, months,</p>
<p>then abruptly shift to the fork in the wood,</p>
<p>straddling multiple identities,</p>
<p>belonging to neither, and wholly embodying both,</p>
<p>simultaneously.</p>
<p>my gender can live at the intersection of</p>
<p>so many meanings,</p>
<p>you could spend three lifetimes</p>
<p>reading the outlines of the bark,</p>
<p>the layers of rings within,</p>
<p>the intricacies weathered down:</p>
<p>years of storms’ stories told beneath the accumulated rims,</p>
<p>and still, you’d only scratch the surface</p>

<p>This is one of those moments you always talk about.</p>
<br /><p>Where the heavens touch the skies</p>
<p>and I am grounded and weightless at once.</p>
<br /><p>Where I drive through a hailstorm,</p>
<p>striking sun rays beaming down,</p>
<p>blue skies above,</p>
<p>some higher power rising,</p>
<br /><p>radiating electrified marrow,</p>
<p>conducting melodic bone structures,</p>
<p>conducting bittersweet symphonies,</p>
<br /><p>granting peaceful serenity,</p>
<p>accepting moments unchangeable,</p>
<p>courageously marching towards change,</p>
<br /><p>I can follow my transcestors’ wisdom,</p>
<p>knowing the difference between,</p>
<p>I can stonewall righteous alt-right nonsense,</p>
<p>focus on love and acceptance,</p>
<br /><p>might sometimes find myself indignant,</p>
<p>but never indifferent,</p>
<p>always the passion,</p>
<p>the dragon’s fueled spirit,</p>
<p>found a wind’s whistle away,</p>
<p>pausing, waiting, nerves fray...</p>

<p>Em resides in the Pacific Northwest, where they are a parent to the coolest kid they know and a magical pair of black cats named Boo and Вор. As an autistic adoptee, Em's poetry searches for an answer to the ever-elusive question of identity. A poet since age 5, Em has spent three decades trying to write his way back home. This is his first publication.</p>

<p>I’ll cradle my head in my lap like a bowl of pearls. I’m afraid of knife fights. In this way, I am a Dullahan or a rogue. I’ve asked to have my head removed by sword but no body obliges, no one ties my knots to bind them. So I work to build a mountain on which to speak softly. Walking from ear to center maybe this is the wrong plot for planning new ways to keep my head from leaving me and going over the ocean to find a new lover find a new place to rest dry lips. I hope that like Medusa, someday, someone will carry me in front of them too. Asking that I bargain marble pillars as an ecstatic occupation. They’ll hold handfuls of shield and hair and sword I can’t ask for, waving above us both like fire torch-light flash and hanging, cooing my red petal offerings like roses</p>

<p>leaves of a new hydrangea.</p>
<p>No blossoms—just bunches</p>
<p>of green getting bigger</p>
<p>after sundown. Everything blooms</p>
