&lt;p&gt;after John died in 97. Before visiting him, I called&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;the 3rd floor nurses’ station at Bailey Boushay&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;to check if his family was there.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;AIDS left my friend unable to talk or eat,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;thrush coated his tongue. He used a small&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;writing tablet to communicate. I climbed&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;into his bed and held his frail body,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;tears welled in his eyes, I caressed his face,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;wiped his mouth; he welcomed my touch,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;but he grew agitated so they strapped him&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;to the bed, put mittens on his hands&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;prevention to keep the feeding tube intact&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;with its liquid concoction of sustenance and&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;medications. After the funeral, at home crying&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;on the edge of my bed he sat next to me,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;but no one was there. I miss how we held&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;each other, we were lonely and scared.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;we take every day. Maraviroc?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Really? Mmmm, sounds sexy,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;so butch. And now undetectable&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;equals un-transmittable. We went&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;from patient zero to getting to zero&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;and quintessential gay couples&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;turned tricks, slept in bath houses,&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;the doorman at The Golden Crown&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;disco, where Queens ruled, sometimes&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;let us in. Always boys on&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Second, women on First—&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;pride infused—this was our:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Freedom. Risk.&lt;/p&gt;

              <text>&lt;p&gt;Tony lives in Seattle, Washington. A 64 year old queer activist, mentor, organizer and champion of harm reduction services. They’ve been living with HIV for nearly 40 years. They were sainted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Abbey of St. Joan in 2013, for work that improves the fabric of the community. They write stories and poetry with the goal to foster intergenerational connection and leadership. In December 2018, they debuted their writing in the performance event, &lt;em&gt;AIDS It’s In Our Blood; Stories of Love, Loss, Rage and Survival&lt;/em&gt; at Seattle’s LGBTQ Center formerly known as Gay City. The poems also appeared in &lt;em&gt;Stonewall’s Legacy A Poetry Anthology&lt;/em&gt; in 2019.&lt;/p&gt;</text>
