<text>
I’m leaving signs to point the way

Radical affirmations of all that’s been unspoken

Subversive gems in my art for future generations

& most especially I'm here to point the way towards a future that is sure to be free and gender diverse like me

For there have been countless ignorant lies perpetrated against us

& we have been treading in its muck

Since the Victorian era heaped curses upon us

Dictating a code of life that is over a century outdated

But here, on my virtual cave walls, are some truths:

& what is true is that the existence of your beautifully perfect trans body is an act of war

Let me then write you, dear warriors who come after me,

all my seeds for a better future

Fold them into a letter I can tuck deep into your coat pockets

I wish for all of you:

Enough smooth roads ahead to keep you carrying on

Because the terrain is sure to be rough & treacherous

For there is a very long way

Of undoing what has been done yet to go

I wish for you:

Someone

Drawn to your beautifully perfect soul

Who will call you:

My sweet baby angel, My Prince, My precious chosen one

& heap all the gender affirming praises that you were robbed of

Since a doctor decided to raise you by your tiny helpless ankles

And proclaim who you were

One breath & an exhale before you even had a chance to cry your first battle cry

Friends, I wish for you:

Gentle forehead kisses

Hair being swept off tear drenched faces

A chosen family of beloveds who look thoughtfully

Into your tired eyes

Telling you a thousand times, A million times over

Until the truth of it weighs so heavy

It displaces all the falsehoods that have unwittingly

Been fashioned into your burdens

I wish for you to see:

You are perfect, As you are

A design brought into being by the old Gods

& millennia before such lies

(Which were never ours to take on)

Were inflicted upon us

Sweet trans children of tomorrow

I wish for you a gentle hand

Deserving of your vulnerability

And I pray that life becomes so peaceful

That you soon forget what it was like

To flinch

At every approach

I wish for you:

Explosive full embodied joy

As you look in the mirror & dance your ecstasy

Moving in ways that no one dare dictate

I send my wishes into the cosmos:

An image of generations of trans bodies walking assured—

Experiencing everything it means to be alive

In their most perfect authentic expressions

Affirmed

& celebrating in all your innate wisdom

The human

You always knew to be

With every mark I leave,

I plant seeds of hope that likely will never flourish until long past my allotted time

& I wish I could set you free

But most of all

I wish for you shelter from doubting your worthiness

& I wish for you to know

How perfect

How beautiful

How complete

How whole

How exactly as the world has always needed

Perfectly

              <text>
It was on a train between Paris and London. She was reading my favorite book and I the newest book by her favorite author, we agreed that this was clearly a case of a book recommending a person.

It was on an airplane. Their nerves made them talk and my boredom made me listen. I held their hand and heard a detailed account of every relationship they had ever had, before I even knew their name.

It was in play group. Our mothers would sip lattes, while we rolled around on the ground and pulled each other’s hair. All these years later we sip the lattes, otherwise not much has changed.

It was at a convention, he was dressed as the Ninth Doctor and I Rose Tyler. He grabbed my hand and said “run” as he dragged me towards a TARDIS photo-op prop. How could I resist that?

It was a blind date set up by mutual friends. We ended up debating Russian literature, Marvel vs. DC, summer and winter, bread butter side up or butter side down, and American film all before dessert came.

It was in a college. We had two classes together in a row. We always spent the walk between them chatting. They liked to keep me on my toes and never let me get away with easy answers.

It was in a crowded coffee shop. The only seat left near an outlet was at the table where she was sitting. I boldly offered to get her a refill on her drink in exchange for the space at her table.

All of these stories are true stories. They are just not my story.

If a monkey typing for an infinite amount of time will someday produce Hamlet. It follows that infinite universes will produce all possible stories.

The truth is, I mostly just sleep on planes and trains. I never went to play group and have never been to a convention or on a blind date. College lies far behind me and I flee from crowded coffee shops.

The truth is, how we meet may be one of these, or none of these, or maybe we won’t meet at all.

So in all this I remind myself that:

All fiction is memoir published in the wrong parallel universe.

              <text>
sitting down and trying to write a poem about queerness.

certainly, it could go on forever

and change

and be entirely the same.

declare its own names,

and give itself to the world.

certainly, it’s an old poem.

the words are reused

and always new

and vast

and joyous

and fruitful.

certainly, none of us are

able to control

the reckless and fragile

creature of love.

certainly, we all know

that exact creature.

certainly, my poem about queerness is a love poem too:

             what a joy

it is to stare into someone’s eyes

just to see them staring back into yours

             oh, how blessed

             is my flesh

             to have come to know

             the tender flesh

             that’s yours.

             what a remarkable thing

             to be in love

like wine and music and a soft afternoon.

but my poem on queerness is a poem of giving too.

if not giving, being here.

breathing and bleeding

singing and crying

loving and loving and loving.

my poem on queerness is turning out,

and is breathing on its own.

             look, the trees are singing!

             the majesty of the pine

             spindles for hands

             it reaches out forever

             and always has enough.

             o’ nature, great symphony

the world truly is a song.

and if music be the food of love, play on,

             or whatever shakespeare said

it was true then and then,

             and now and now.

my poem on queerness knows two things:

we are here to

grow and change,

and reach out in abundance.

and we are here until we aren’t.

but meanwhile

love and time.

following people on TikTok whose usernames

recreate the lyrics of Rick Astley’s 1987 hit

“Never Gonna Give You Up.” There is,

of course, so much to say about this –

the jolt of satisfaction he must feel when,

for example, he finds someone whose name is

and or to. It is, perhaps, not so very different

from what I feel now writing these lines. But here

is the part that’s not in the parenting books, how

when he walks into the kitchen to show you

how many he’s found so far, and you’re trying

to make dinner but the dog is barking because

there’s an Amazon guy on the porch

you don’t ask why, you don’t say Good lord

Plant your feet, stay as he towers over you now

from behind and holds his phone over

your shoulder to show you, and then

leans his head against your head, relaxes

his body against your body, until it becomes

a joke, of course, you’re making each other

fall now, and finally you have to say OK stop

I need to make this spaghetti. But for those

few moments it was as if an animal

had wandered out of the woods and into

your kitchen, a moose perhaps, partially

domesticated, a moose in a hoodie, and placed

his snout over the fence of your shoulder,

              <text>
I’ve been told my hands look like a child’s: too short nails, dirt stained, thin. I hate the sound of paper bags being ripped. My earliest memory is my mother telling me my job was to look after my brother and protect him; I was in kindergarten. My table is consumed by repurposed egg cartons filled with basil and sage, carnations and zinnias, just starting to emerge. My mom told me, You hate me because you are me, and I have never forgotten the rage and fear I felt in that parking lot. I avoid eye contact when I’m about to cry. My dog taught me I’m anxious-preoccupied. I don’t know when the grief will end. But did you see the great basin violets in the mountains last night?! My middle name is Johnna, like John with an “a”–because if you were a boy, you would have been named John after my grandfather. In second grade I got in trouble for holding the new student’s hand when I thought she didn’t understand where to go; her mom came to school the next day to report to the teacher that I made her daughter uncomfortable. I can’t begin to count the number of times I learned that I couldn’t be loved and gay. My sister calls me Winnie, like Winnie the Pooh, and I call her Poopoo because our young selves declared we’d be forever inseparable, so we split a whole name into two and each adorned a part of it to ourselves to prove it. I call the blonde streaks in my hair sun kisses; losing the sun was the second hardest thing about shaving my head. I have a tendency to stay in a room with the fire alarm blaring a little too long. What I love most about my name is the way it sounds when my brother and sister say it. The first time I heard the word queer it was defined to me as peculiar, odd; the second time: fuck you. I have scars on almost every part of my body. I swim with my eyes closed because I’m terrified of what I see when I open my eyes underwater. When my partner talks about having kids, I worry about all that I might pass on to an unconsenting party. My house is full of spice jars with saved seeds from my garden and dried flower bouquets hanging on a long string of lights. I spend my days tending the land; my hands are teaching me that I can grow something other than pain.
