a $60.00 refund for our marriage license

stating that the Oregon Supreme Court has invalidated

our union, all nineteen years of it. People like us

are not allowed to marry.

I am:

what they mean when they say “culture wars”,

the reason our president was re-elected,

a threat to every straight marriage,

news of the fall of civilization,

          a sign of decaying morals,

the wolf at the door of family values,

even, one man said, quite possibly the cause

of the destruction of the twin towers.

I never knew I was that dangerous.

Every morning over breakfast

I hear on the radio

the voices of those who hate me,

those who make it their

business to hate us for who we are and

<p">who we love.

According to them, our fight for equal rights

to love and to marry, to fair housing and employment,

to raise healthy children, to see ourselves reflected in positive ways

in books and on TV, to let young gays and lesbians know they are not alone,

to be safe in our homes and on the streets--

is just the homosexual “agenda”.

Parents and preachers,

lawyers and politicians,

get a life I think, what would you do with your time

if you didn’t have our dangerous love to fight?

A sin is knowingly polluting the earth for profit,

A sin is killing women, children, fathers and brothers and sons

for oil or land or power.

A sin is not thinking about our children’s children’s children with each decision that we make.

My love is not a sin.

I have a photograph of our handfasting ceremony,

my right hand clasped over your left hand,

fingers entwined, the red silk cord

that binds us still spiraling up our arms. I remember

that slow turn to face you, the unexpected power of our vows--

giving voice to promises we’ve been keeping, unstated,

in all our years together.

This much is true: I am a woman with grey in her hair, a mixed-blood Cherokee-Irish adoptee with two artificial hips and a couple of disabled welsh corgi dogs, I am teacher and writer and daughter and sister and friend and neighbor and, whether the city, the state or even the constitution recognizes or sanctions it, I am married to another woman, in heart, body, mind, in all my outlaw self.

—Kate Miller
</text>

We all

fall

out of cars when we’re three—

when the excitement to climb down ourselves

puts our center of gravity in front of our skill level,

our little forehead in front of our feet,

out of windows in Moscow

for talking trash about Putin—

and that’s why we don’t live in Moscow,

off a bicycle at least once—

it’s a rite of passage impossible to avoid.

We fall from grace no matter how hard we try,

from pedestals too high—elevated by another’s need.

We fall into the wrong crowd when our parents aren’t looking.

We fall out of favor, out of fashion,

or all over ourselves to prove a point.

We fall in love

and out again;

we fall apart

and start again.

We might fall clipping a sandal toe on the edge of

a sidewalk buckled from the heat

or by slipping on black ice lying in wait under a dusting of snow,

or we could lose our balance stubbing a tree root along the path—

a full-frontal faceplant.

Lots of bleeding, but

by grace, the very same we fell from,

nothing breaks—

not a tooth, not a nose, not a lens in our brand-new designer glasses,

nothing

except our confidence.

Blood pouring from our nose into our hands,

dripping off our chin where a flap of skin now dangles,

proceeds down the forearms in search of an elbow.

We’re exercising every blood-stopping skill

learned over years of practice—

as a kid, with our children,

for an aging parent unexpectedly fainting in the kitchen.

Finally, the last drops fall.

We look as if we’ve just torn open a small animal

with our bare hands

and feasted on its heart for breakfast.

Disbelief gathers up presence of mind—

we get up.

Sheer determination steps in to escort us

back to the car.

We don’t give a second thought to what’s happened

to our confidence

the confidence

left lying in blood-soaked dirt

no ceremony, not even a good-bye.

2.

Snow falls,

leaves fall,

water falls over a cliff.

But unlike snowflakes,

or leaves in autumn,

or waterfalls diving into pools far below,

we’re propelled by an intrepid resolve

to get back up.

Falling off your bike at seven is a temporary setback

on the road to mastering balance on ever bigger bikes.

Falling face first at seventy is a turning point—a switchback

where independence takes on hiking poles

and Life Alerts dangling around our necks.

Ask the once free-flying, twirling snowflake how she feels

ending her journey face-first, nestled in a snowdrift—

each one with the only confidence they have left

they’ll never twirl like that again.

              <text>
Once I saw a dead cub floating near shore, free of fur

(Where, for that matter, can any of us?)

In a speedboat’s wake the ghost cub rose and fell, upright

over loaves of Wonder Bread, still wrapped and on fire,

in a shallow pit. Or I should say, smoldering.

Bear bait, the ranger told me. Don’t you know?

with a dirty sponge, to wrap heat tape on pipes in the crawl space, to try

          (vainly) to protect what’s ours.

                                   into canisters of rage

peace is not the way

we feel, it is a strategy

                                   the whole world is watching

as nausea rolls over us

a great sea of clacking bones.

What color stitches blood to humanity?

if we exercise our right—

carry the Wild Wild West

in a holster,

if we walk into supermarkets to buy

bread with our .38 caliber PEACE strapped

to our hips

would we survive your assumptions?

Can we cowboy like the Caucasian? I saw,

a bulging khaki clad

ghost man, striding

by art posters on 2nd Avenue

his gun holstered.

I called ‘cause

I didn’t want to be the one to say

yes, I’d seen him moments before

he bulleted a school, a movie theater, a post office,

a school, a school, a school

911, “oh it’s ok, he’s not a threat.

oh, it’s ok? he has the right.”

Our skin is a weapon

you are afraid of

Your skin is a grenade

you have used

I have seen

the boys in black, the boys in blue

the boys in black, the boys in blue

wandering these bruised streets

                                             looking for an angry fix

I have seen them sewn together

by the red river thread.

we have forgotten

black, is not a color

              <text>
It was on a train between Paris and London. She was reading my favorite book and I the newest book by her favorite author, we agreed that this was clearly a case of a book recommending a person.

It was on an airplane. Their nerves made them talk and my boredom made me listen. I held their hand and heard a detailed account of every relationship they had ever had, before I even knew their name.

It was in play group. Our mothers would sip lattes, while we rolled around on the ground and pulled each other’s hair. All these years later we sip the lattes, otherwise not much has changed.

It was at a convention, he was dressed as the Ninth Doctor and I Rose Tyler. He grabbed my hand and said “run” as he dragged me towards a TARDIS photo-op prop. How could I resist that?

It was a blind date set up by mutual friends. We ended up debating Russian literature, Marvel vs. DC, summer and winter, bread butter side up or butter side down, and American film all before dessert came.

It was in a college. We had two classes together in a row. We always spent the walk between them chatting. They liked to keep me on my toes and never let me get away with easy answers.

It was in a crowded coffee shop. The only seat left near an outlet was at the table where she was sitting. I boldly offered to get her a refill on her drink in exchange for the space at her table.

All of these stories are true stories. They are just not my story.

If a monkey typing for an infinite amount of time will someday produce Hamlet. It follows that infinite universes will produce all possible stories.

The truth is, I mostly just sleep on planes and trains. I never went to play group and have never been to a convention or on a blind date. College lies far behind me and I flee from crowded coffee shops.

The truth is, how we meet may be one of these, or none of these, or maybe we won’t meet at all.

So in all this I remind myself that:

All fiction is memoir published in the wrong parallel universe.

              <text>
Loud footsteps felt within the chest, the walls cave in and I am trapped beneath the ruins.

Memories collide with memories, bounce wall to wall

in the claustrophobic space I call my mind

and I am desperate for an escape. The cries for a feeling of belonging flatline through my

uneasiness felt within every space.

A descendent of endlessly fleeing parents fails to model making a place feel like home and

the screams serve as an exile; I am cast outside where I am said to belong.

Childhood house mistaken for childhood home and the pummeling

bleeds into the walls and consumes me.

An exercise in class demands I place myself on a hypothetical map to demonstrate where I

feel at home and I wither. I stand on the spot where my apartment resides but that is not

where my heart is. They

tell you home is where the heart is without accounting for the diffusion of one's heart in

people now-absent. They

tell you home is where the heart is without acknowledging the beat-down, spun-around

heart that is afraid to be of use any longer.

If only you could differentiate between heart and home like you can between mother and

father.

I hang posters on my bedroom walls trying to leave pieces of me in

the site I rest at night but it is lousy. It is a lousy attempt/a lousy cause and I am not sure

whether I will ever succeed.

A word lost in translation, devoid of definition, it rings obsolete to this imagination. For I

find refuge in writing and shelter in my apartment, there is no home in which my mind feels

at ease and my body relaxes.

My home is everywhere and nowhere.

I am fresh to this Earth with limited time remaining, yet I still question whether I will be

forever detached from where I was birthed. I feel the weight of witnessing others’ belonging

in my heart and await the snap of the strings.

Staring through window after window, I begin to view myself from above as if there is not

even a home in this body.

As I am abused by life’s forces with no end in sight, I shrink into my skin in search of

warmth as a place. Warmth as a place such as present in home but I remain cold without.

The passage of time envelopes me and while I live and live and live with no grand escape, I

exclaim:

Heaven please save me and make me your home.

              <text>
I was a fingerbreadths from love. Then I got lost in the snow.

Love me from a distance or not at all, love me through the window, love through the locked door, love me from across the country, over state lines and timezones- love me three hours ahead.

There's only so much love I can take before I start to be seen. We can only get so close before we start to merge into one creature- grotesque with desire, our exposed and fractured rib cageholding a single rotting heart

It’s cold out here, is what I mean. It’s freezing, the hum drum dullness, rain on a roof and the rumble of trains, sensation and sound and- skin, split open you can see is just another organ. The clouds roll in. It’s looking like another storm, but then you press knife to chest and heart bursts out- here is my devotion, staining your sleeve.

Love is a disease, it’s a contagion. It lines my lungs in with mold- touch me and feel your fingers sink into my skin, soft with decomposition. Love me too much and with too many hands and I'll swallow you whole. I don't want you to see the gaping maw inside of me, the emptiness behind my skin, all decay black and thin blood, I’d rather let you think I was clean and not hemorrhaging devotion. I’d rather you not see the bloodstains.

You were never supposed to stay, is what I mean. The archeologists who find us won’t be able to see us as anything but one strange creature- bones intertwined and preserved tissues melted together. I suppose with contagions there is little to do other than burn. The thing with burning is that it purges the parasite, sure, but where does that leave you and me? Dust and ash and begging for it to stop? It might be better with this: me curled up a few steps from the porch and you inside. Me, freezing from tongue to teeth to lips curled in the shape of your name. You, asleep in bed, finding me in the morning when everything that needed to be said has already been spoken out loud.

There’s a hollowness at the center of me with room for two. I’ll keep the door locked and let you believe I'm whole enough to love, but in thousands of years when my bones are exhumed they’ll see that love is an infection that consumed me down to the marrow.

I’ve heard heaven is cold to the touch, is what I mean. I’ve heard it’s always snowing and the angels are all made by children and the fingers are always blue. I’ve heard it's cold.

You wake up three hours before me and I’ve been dreaming of you the whole time, your blurry face an echo across the long stretch of land. Your name hitch-hiked thousands of miles to crawl into my mouth and rest heavy and bitter and burning on my tongue like stomach acid- if we’re not careful it’ll kill us both. I dream of you and swallow down the poison of longing and do not rest easy.

You built me a home with no windows, is what I mean. Build me a city too, call it holy land, hallowed land, church cemeteries house enough corpses that I can’t be lonely anymore. I’m tired, is what I mean. There’s food on the table but it’s rotten. There’s knives in the kitchen but they’re dull. I’ll love you forever, I mean. But I won’t get close enough to touch.

              <text>
I trade for a minus tide which looks like we’re walking on moon. Green shrimp perch on fragile crater of dirt like entering world for first time. When you ask me where I’m from, I never say what I’m thinking. This mud covers my mouth at night, where I dream of missing my correct documents, not having affairs in order. I miss my step here and sink foot into muck, dipping past surface. Dream little fish drowning in my trousers, microbes biting skin. If I’m infected, I’ll shut door and pull blinds. I’ll keep eyes open as long as song spins.

~

The artist has made a swirling square – a 20 x 17 inch black ink storm. The grass breathes each of our names, chanting to soft dirt. Circulation, soft, chime of throat. I trade swirling black-ink storm with cloud-like octopus ballooning across awakening sky. Water covered bits of ground I stood on yesterday when I soaked my shoes. Need to prepare, to upright and gather my own ship for this bright and biting future.

~

I trade undersea green muck and moss with clean slate. Rain another threat, another law to cover sky. What can we dream of tomorrow, when our belts are even stricter, when our floor floods again. I am too often boxed in plastic, chilled, sodden tasting my own tongues. These days, I wait to breathe out front door, listening to trees flutter, waiting for them to sprout gifts.

~

I trade a light blue full-belly sky. We sat in grass and twirled with wind and flower after visiting grand tree. Later in night, driving down tourist strip, we crave late-night fries, searching our pockets for errant coins. I feel mixed up in this box, trying to kickstart a low flame. I am only one this evening wearing mask, holding my breath porously. I’m thinking of what comes in, what goes out. I’m also waiting again for door to close so I can take down my face, lay down my hair.

~

I trade another ink-black night with insistence on explaining everything. We could be light-diluted and sea-sparkling, asking for a thousand more decompositions from unfolding future. Instead an agitated sea of milk for at least 45 nights. You insist on slicking surface. The bacteria will grow again. I’m also keeping my mouth shut, saving this breath for now.

~

I trade for a story where you stand in wind and do not bend. Instead, little plovers dip in and out of water. We watch as little feet patter on sea’s surface. Beyond this frame is the real storm —glimpse of upturn, disruption. There is no fear ahead, as if calm stretches out for miles, circling peninsula with its orbit.

~

I trade sure electric afternoon to walk down sun. On other side an open gate waiting for a missing human. I trade ghost I have been waiting for. I’m imagining each hour spent quickly without much to distinguish. I set hooded light with slow glimmer at door. We quiet down inside and shutter our eyes down, wondering when we will be touched by the century. Instead, shift into next glaring hour, last meal shifting in our blood. Later you ask me what I remember, I pull my mouth wide to fish.

~

I trade creature we came across under deck months ago – a shock of bright purple, seastar gripping to pull open treasure. We all saw this omen as beginning to wonder except you shut in our little cab, nursing old memory. I trade now for heat after cloud and fog. I dip my hands in muck, looking for hard shell, a home in mud to eat. I look at my fellow murderers sinking into earth. If I trade in my sharp eye, loud tongue for this long road of green. If I store my tiny shell in memory, filled up with birds I can’t name. I watch down road for something I can’t yet perceive, but fear is coming for us.

I can’t quite make out this cloudy sky. We’re peering out from behind glass pane until released into night, walking through moisture. I can’t quite make out what is blocking us from sea.

Notes: This writing was first composed while at Willapa Bay AiR in response to “Minus Tide” and “Deception Pass” by Juliet Shen and the article “What Causes Swaths of the Ocean to Glow a Magnificent Milky Green?” by Sam Keck Scott in Hakai. The form was inspired by a writing prompt by Aliah Lavonne Tigh.
</text>
