<text>

I am watching you– kneeling before the bones of St. Peter.

Head bowed, lips quickly quivering as you recite ancient words that mean

little to you and even less to me.

“Oh Glorious Saint Peter...”

It is trancelike– analytical but emotional–

as I can see that cute little furrow in your brow–

the one you get when I leave ice cold coffee cups

on our bedside table, leaving little rings.

Or the same one that appears when we walk through the grocery store,

hand in hand, and, for a moment, I break our sacred covenant

for a box of Pop Tarts– “that isn't on the list”

*sigh*

My eyes wander up and down the walls, scanning corner to corner,

quietly noticing each adornment in this chapel.

(It’s really pretty gay when you think about it)

Gold plated sconces, bedazzled, bejeweled

robes of luscious velvet and elegant lace table toppers.

A dedicated crowd of adorers... moving their lips in tandem

to songs they all somehow know the words to, but I don't.

Reverently, handing their money over to the idol of their affection.

Passing the plate down and down–a drag queen’s dream.

*sigh*

I close my eyes for a moment to call out to my own Saint–

Sister Mary Clarence, why have you forsaken me...

(This church needs a little more Whoopi.)

I think about that scene–that one we can both sing whenever asked.

“Hail mother of mercy and of love. Oh Maria”.

Remembering how happy we were. are. were.

*sigh*

I don't understand how you could bring yourself here.

How you could wiggle yourself into your freshly pressed Easter chinos to

stand up, kneel, sit down, stand up, kneel, sit down

in endless liturgical repetition.

But then again, you’ve never had to worry

about the whole of your back being exposed every time you kneel

or the front of your shirt spatchcocking itself

if and when you stand up too quickly.

Your pants have never “crown of thorns”-ed themselves

around your waist or your thighs or your legs.

Do not forgive them father,

because they know exactly what they do.

You scoff at me for wearing my baggiest sweatpants to church.

But It’s the only comfort I can find in a place like this.

*sigh*

I wonder what flows through your mind

like the hymns and prayers that fill this spacious cavern...

I track the vibrations of faith as they bounce off the monolith walls

both the literal I can see and the metaphysical I can feel

when we met, I was sure you didn't like me

you were cold, reserved, impossible to see within and yes... I was looking

but then you kissed me and I wasn't sure what to do with that

and then you kissed me again

the way you grabbed my waist felt unfamiliar

you were present but not forceful, gently aggressive in the most exciting way

your hand glided over my curves and folds without hesitation

as you handled me like an antique book- fragile but worthy of turned pages

and now we’ve met each others mothers

and vacationed just about everywhere we’ve wanted

we’ve regrouted the bathroom and mourned together over childhood pets

and bickered over new duvet covers. gingham it is.

*sigh*

I wish you would look at me the way you look at these remains

that I could hold your deepest attention for longer than a moment

And I wonder, when the times comes, and all my flesh and fat falls away

Will you love til I am bones?

              <text>
When did healing become defined by flirty, fragrant complicated smells

floral, fruity, and musky scents

Cause it’s not.

Sleeping in a bed of tears

And snot filled tissues

New medications purged into a bowl of shit

Full of regret

You were certain that healed on your trip to the motherland

Reliving traumas cause the therapist told you so

Seeing it on paper only makes it feel real

“Isn’t this counterproductive” You ask.

“You are safe here”

Wondering how that feels

Psychiatrist #8 seemed promising

Besides the fact that she seemed like she was on something

Luring clients in with whimsical trust

Highly interactive meds and ditz

Certainly taught me a lesson I will never repeat

First came the dizziness, then came warm skin to cold wood floors

Fighting for my life one stool at a time

My body desperately releasing toxins

These toxins should of came with a warning

One thing the satan and stink bombs have in common

Wishfully dreaming of waking up to good morning texts from the lipstick lover who left me besotted

Instead it was a car crash on your inhale

Throwing out the alarm and closets of clothing like Angela taught me

Panic attacks proving to be more consistent than the average friend

Eventually creating refuge as I exhaled

Therapists

Boofin breath and cavities

Mother wondering when you last brushed your teeth

Old laundry turned into fragrance

Despair turned into perfume

Worry turned into cologne

Topped with 3 sprays of the Dolce & Gabbana light blue

not knowing how long this episode will last

Living in a world where paychecks are smaller than the 1.6 ounce bottle I consecrated

Attempting to mask anxiety sweat

with natural deodorant never works

Rescheduled wash days under wigs and berets

With no plans insight

Handing out empty promises to yourself

Just like dating your past lover

Consumed minds

forget to eat meals

serve fleeting happiness on boxed plates

Sugar cookies for dinner

Detoxing the next day

Imagining the battle of conquest between vitamins, brain fog and constipation in your body

Deja vu like the WWF episodes you used to watch with your brother before the days of parental control

You writhed in realization that the invaders have squatter rights

For now, I must abandon my love for dairy

Night terrors permeating hopes of a brighter day

In exchange for a better life, I discover

Healing is the aroma

Sourcing manure in fertilizer provides nutrients for seeds to grow

Be sure to seal in the nutrients with a wet soak so your seedling can bloom

You’ll be grateful when the fertilizer aroma passes and you can smell the roses and your

clean armpits too

I guess what I’m trying to say is I don’t trust you.

Don’t look like that, its not personal. Why would I open my heart up and lay my fears and hopes and dreams out for your perusal; invite you to play this hand with no minimum bet?

Give me skin.

What is the grace of darting dragonflies?

How do fallen leaves smell like home?

Season after season of seeking, I traveled

the pathless places, viewing magnified

the centers of flowers, interpreting the rustling

of trees, peeking under rocks to reveal dirt worlds

inhabited by worms squirming, shiny-backed beetles bustling,

arthropods armored and ambling.

A spider's journey across my palm — thrilling

yet still a mystery. What did it mean?

Nature kept her secrets and I kept mine,

not adding bisexual to my vocabulary until I was seventeen and my friend

confided in me and I thought Oh, there it is, the chrysalis of me.

I love people like I love trees. Is a larch deciduous

or conifer? Is a monkey puzzle needle or thorn?

Yes.

Give me a fern's unfurling,

a woman's knowing smile,

a lichen's branching,

a man's hand cupped,

a person's unique mark on life like rings in heartwood.

I am home to forests, ever-growing. I lift the rocks of me

              <text>
Emily Dickinson goes to her first slam at 14.

She brings a journal full of feathers and bees.

She wears a cardigan over a printed button up her father

said was too loud, which she leaves on a chair almost

immediately. It will be there when she comes back.

She reads a piece about grass. It’s actually about longing.

It’s actually about a girl. She doesn’t know how to

use the microphone. The judges award her

an average of 4.8 points, but everyone encourages

her to come back. Which she will never do. She goes home alone.

Emily Dickinson goes to her first slam at 19.

She crushes the 1-minute rounds, each sundrenched

word magnified to scorching. A boy offers to buy her

a drink. A girl offers to buy her a drink. But her eyes are already

swirling, soul expanding beyond her fitted pants and high-necked

starch. Already absorbing the ether of applause. She runs

outside. Stands in the chill autumn with the smokers, gasping

against an empty night begging to be filled with anything.

Emily Dickinson goes to her first slam at 24. She does not read

from a notebook, does not hide her slender fingers in a deep pocket.

She recites a piece about spring that’s actually about a girl, actually

about being a girl, it’s funny, and she knows it, and the audience steeps

in her sonics like sweet tea. She goes up again with a piece about pain.

Two men leave in a huff. No one misses them. She tries a stunt

towards the end, pulls flower petals from her sleeves, but they spill out

too early and everyone sees her wince, tells her to go in, and she snaps

out an ending dark and crisp as winter dawns. A boy offers her

a drink. A girl offers her a drink. Later she will write a poem about

following the girl down concrete steps to taste her kiss. She will

use plums for central imagery. The poem will be a lie or a wish

or NSP entry. She goes home alone.

Emily Dickinson goes to her first slam at 35. She wears the white

dress, but only to be ironic. She doesn’t bring a notebook. In the first

round, Emily stares out into a crowd that has already cast her in a play

she’s no interest in starring in, there are so many better stars to hold her

gaze, her gay lives in sundrenched fields, she would much rather welcome

them to count her feathers, feel the seasons

murmur their own secret longings with her breath across their necks.

But not tonight. She steps up to the mic and with the calm fury of a spring-thaw stream

invites Billy Collins to fuck right off into the sun.

She gets all 10s and goes home alone.

—R. Thursday
</text>

              <text>
I’m leaving signs to point the way

Radical affirmations of all that’s been unspoken

Subversive gems in my art for future generations

& most especially I'm here to point the way towards a future that is sure to be free and gender diverse like me

For there have been countless ignorant lies perpetrated against us

& we have been treading in its muck

Since the Victorian era heaped curses upon us

Dictating a code of life that is over a century outdated

But here, on my virtual cave walls, are some truths:

& what is true is that the existence of your beautifully perfect trans body is an act of war

Let me then write you, dear warriors who come after me,

all my seeds for a better future

Fold them into a letter I can tuck deep into your coat pockets

I wish for all of you:

Enough smooth roads ahead to keep you carrying on

Because the terrain is sure to be rough & treacherous

For there is a very long way

Of undoing what has been done yet to go

I wish for you:

Someone

Drawn to your beautifully perfect soul

Who will call you:

My sweet baby angel, My Prince, My precious chosen one

& heap all the gender affirming praises that you were robbed of

Since a doctor decided to raise you by your tiny helpless ankles

And proclaim who you were

One breath & an exhale before you even had a chance to cry your first battle cry

Friends, I wish for you:

Gentle forehead kisses

Hair being swept off tear drenched faces

A chosen family of beloveds who look thoughtfully

Into your tired eyes

Telling you a thousand times, A million times over

Until the truth of it weighs so heavy

It displaces all the falsehoods that have unwittingly

Been fashioned into your burdens

I wish for you to see:

You are perfect, As you are

A design brought into being by the old Gods

& millennia before such lies

(Which were never ours to take on)

Were inflicted upon us

Sweet trans children of tomorrow

I wish for you a gentle hand

Deserving of your vulnerability

And I pray that life becomes so peaceful

That you soon forget what it was like

To flinch

At every approach

I wish for you:

Explosive full embodied joy

As you look in the mirror & dance your ecstasy

Moving in ways that no one dare dictate

I send my wishes into the cosmos:

An image of generations of trans bodies walking assured—

Experiencing everything it means to be alive

In their most perfect authentic expressions

Affirmed

& celebrating in all your innate wisdom

The human

You always knew to be

With every mark I leave,

I plant seeds of hope that likely will never flourish until long past my allotted time

& I wish I could set you free

But most of all

I wish for you shelter from doubting your worthiness

& I wish for you to know

How perfect

              <text>
                      雲橫秦嶺家何在

                              —Han Yu (韓愈)

Mountain, o mountain, your white hat and

deep blue wrinkles bounding the mortal

skyline, bounding the world that my eyes

can see. Clouds, o clouds, soft and nimble

as a green armorless brigade of routine solitude

marching in to liberate the sizzling city,

tear down alien vermilion suns and bring me

solace. A lonely, lonely solace as here I

sit, lofty heavens rumbling beneath me,

and when I sit here, looking at you, I remember

you are the direction of home.

Mountain, o mountain! My home, it is far

west, eastern but far west, east and west

conjoined at a made-up line. When you

are here, sunlight over snow caps, sunlight

over cloud mantles, my home is asleep, its

silty river curled up like a gourd-patterned cat.

I have friends there, just as there are

mountains there, uplifted by gods fighting,

punctured by self-appointed gods of chemistry.

We used to be together, just as

the mountains are still together, huddled cozily

in green—lovely little things. But today

I am far away, and seeing you jut out

all brazenly, I think of my homebound friends.

Mountain, o mountain, how do I get to see

my friends? I mean, I see them every day,

electronic reductions of themselves before I

switch them off, shove them into my pocket,

returning to other things, other people,

other loves. But a love of sharp mountains

is unlike a love of the rounded, eroded ones,

for it burns brighter, but it rarely cuts deep.

The age of the earth, the soul of it all,

draws from the lovely little things called hills,

eroded mountains of time past, stirred

out of unquiet sadness, a greenish gentle

memory. A memory of past friends.

You see, mountain, I miss my friends

more than a telescope misses stars on a clouded eve,

more than trees miss the warmth of sun in the winter,

but just as much as a bird, grand-daughter of

grass-eating ankylosaurs, longs southernly

when seasonal unreadiness shrivels her wings.

She rarely misses home, but when she does,

it warms her, it churns her, beckoning to her

with the promise of love. So she tries

to fly again, soaring over you mountain,

but the south, the south of her home,

is an abstract place, for she misses home,

but it is the missing that makes it home.

—Nguyễn Bình
</text>
